How Often Should You Fertilize Your Lawn
Something that everyone can appreciate and enjoy in their own way is a lush, beautiful and healthy lawn. Now, unless you are a hayfever sufferer, it is very hard to not relish the peaceful days of playing, lounging and socialising on your own little patch of grass; but it is easy to underestimate quite how much maintenance and care such a lawn can demand.

A world of balance

All life represents a spectacular balancing act. A vast array of different chemicals, elements and external factors that all just happen to be working in unison, in the particularly special way that means a plant or animal can exist. From the simplest single celled organisms to the most complex plants and animals, this statement holds true and life cannot exist if even one of those things is incorrect. Incidentally, the most complex genome currently known is that of a flower called the Paris Japonica, which has around 149 billion base pairs in its DNA. This flower is very rare and only found in specific areas of Japan, where the conditions are just right for it. Having 149 billion base pairs makes the genetic makeup of this flower around 50 times the size of the human genome. It’s a fascinating thought to consider that a flower is 50 times more complex than anyone reading this.

Establishing the correct conditions

Hopefully this will illustrate just how delicate and complex life is, and that plants are no exception to this rule. Understanding what type of plant you have is key to finding out exactly what its needs are and how you can best look after it. As far as grass is concerned, although there are many different varieties, most of the common types can largely be seen as either warm or cool season grass. The main difference is that warm season grasses are predominantly dormant during colder months, doing the majority of their growing during hotter times and cold season grass is the opposite. Consequently, fertilising your lawn at the wrong time for each category can actually be detrimental to its health.

Timing is everything

Looking at these two categories, the times that fertiliser can be applied also varies accordingly. Cool season grass should be fertilised during the autumn months, with a second treatment in late spring to give the best results. Warm season grass however, thrives in the heat and as such is far more active during summer. This means that fertilising it during late spring and early summer is the most effective time. Whichever time of year works best for your grass, understanding how to fertilise it is also very important. Choosing either the morning or the evening, when the day is cooler, is always recommended as this allow the plants to absorb nutrients with greater ease as the soil temperature is lower and as such provides less stress at these times. Also, unless a liquid fertiliser is being used, a thorough watering before fertilising will dramatically improve absorption rates; just don’t do it before watering or significant rainfall.

Achieving the best result

Understanding when to feed your grass for the optimum results is definitely important knowledge, but it is still only a part of the equation. Maintaining an already healthy lawn is considerably easier than trying to nurse a sick one back to health. In fact on many occasions it can be nigh on impossible to get a lawn looking as full and lush as you would like without starting again. Should this describe your lawn, then having it returfed can definitely get you results with a good degree of haste and certainty. You should however ensure the quality of the turf you are purchasing. Our turf farm is staffed by experts in lawn care and we ensure that our grass is exactly what the customer orders, keeping impurities, and worse still weeds, out through careful nurturing and care. If you cannot guarantee the same from your supplier, then it is definitely worth thinking twice before you put any money down.
