Palmetto Buffalo grass has an average winter colour. During extreme winter weather, it will discolour and regain its colour during Spring.
Palmetto Buffalo grass performs well in full sun and will cope in shaded areas. A Palmetto lawn requires 2 to 4 hours of direct sunlight. No grass can survive in extreme shade, Palmetto has a good winter active growth. Palmetto is recommended for up to 65% shade in areas with low wear and up to 45% shade in areas with moderate to high wear.
Palmetto Buffalo Grass needs less mowing, and although it grows across the ground at a fast rate, its upward leaf growth is similar to most other Buffalo grass varieties. One of the main reasons people buy Buffalo is that it requires less mowing.
Palmetto has a deep root system, making it drought resistant. It is the efficient water user, helping it to cope in dry conditions, It will still need water to maintain its condition if the season is really dry. Leaving it with no water can cause the Lawn to die.
Once the turf is layed and is well established, its dense growth makes it much harder for weeds to establish. As Palmetto actively grows in most areas in winter, it is less likely to allow weeds to invade. Of course, occasionally weeds can develop in a Palmetto buffalo lawn.
